Liberty Victoria – our profile
(Victorian Council for Civil Liberties Inc.)
Primary Concerns:
Liberty Victoria is one of Australia's leading human rights and civil liberties organisations. We trace our history back to 1936 and have been campaigning for human rights for 70 years. We believe in a society based on the democratic participation of all its members and the principles of justice, openness, the right to dissent and respect for diversity. We aim to secure the equal rights of everyone so far as they don't infringe the rights and freedoms of others. We oppose any abuse or excess of power by the state. We aim to influence public debate and government policy on a range of human rights issues. We try to secure changes to laws and policies, where civil liberties are not adequately respected. We prepare submissions to government, support court cases defending civil liberties, engage regularly in public debates, produce publications, and conduct many other activities.
Primary Activities:
Liberty Victoria works to defend and extend human rights and freedoms in Victoria. We recently successfully campaigned for a Human Rights Charter, litigated on behalf of asylum seekers of the Tampa in relation to international law obligations, and opposed the unnecessary infringement of civil liberties through: the anti-terrorist legislation, the new ID Card, and sedition laws. Our primary activities involve making submissions to government, campaigning, and engaging in public debates.
How to Get Involved:
The best way to get involved with Liberty's campaigns is to join us. Liberty is a membership organisation, and relies on the support of thousands of individuals who want to protect and promote civil liberties and human rights. As a Liberty member, you'll be helping us to take the government to task whenever they go too far. And you'll be able to share new ideas, high level debate and thought-provoking opinions that you simply won't find elsewhere. Most importantly you'll play your part in defending our basic rights and freedoms. You can also help Liberty to continue its work by making a donation. Every donation we receive makes a difference - no gift is too small - it all helps.
